Two Registrations. Two Different Purposes. Both Free.

GSTIN (GST registration) and Udyam registration (MSME certification) are entirely separate things that serve different purposes. Most manufacturers either confuse them or skip one. Neither is okay.

RegistrationWhat It IsWhy You Need ItCost
GSTINTax identity number for GST complianceRequired by Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho to list products — even if you're below the mandatory thresholdFree
Udyam / MSMEGovernment recognition as a micro, small, or medium enterpriseUnlocks priority lending, subsidies, government tender access, and legal payment protectionsFree
Below the ₹40 Lakh Threshold?

If your annual turnover is below ₹40 lakh (₹20L in some states), you are technically not required to register for GST. However, Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho all require a GSTIN to list products — even for sellers below the threshold. Voluntary registration is the standard path, and it takes the same 7–10 days as mandatory registration.

Part 1: GSTIN Registration — Step by Step

  1. 1

Go to gst.gov.in → Services → Registration → New Registration

Select your state, district, and business constitution. For most small manufacturers: "Proprietorship" for sole owners, "Partnership Firm" for partners, "Private Limited Company" if you're incorporated.

  2. 2

Fill Part A — Basic Business Details

Enter your legal name exactly as it appears on your PAN card. Exact match is non-negotiable — a single spelling difference causes automatic rejection. Enter your personal mobile number and email for OTP verification. Use numbers you actively monitor.

  3. 3

    Upload Your Documents

Each file must be under 1MB in JPG, PDF, or PNG format. The GST portal has a strict size limit — compress images before uploading using any free tool. Blurry or incorrectly oriented documents are flagged for manual review, which adds 5+ days.

  4. 4

    Submit and Note Your ARN

After submission you receive an Application Reference Number (ARN). Save this immediately — it's your proof of pending registration and some platforms accept it as a temporary substitute while your GSTIN processes.

  5. 5

Respond to Any Officer Queries Immediately

The assigned GST officer may call or email requesting clarification or additional documents. Respond within 24 hours — if you miss the window, your application goes back to the queue and restarts the 7-day clock.

Document checklist for Proprietorship (most common):

  • PAN card of the proprietor (individual PAN — not a firm PAN)
  • Aadhaar card of the proprietor (must match PAN name exactly)
  • Recent passport-size photograph (JPEG, under 100KB)
  • Business address proof — electricity bill under 3 months old, OR property tax receipt, OR rent/lease agreement with NOC from landlord
  • Bank account proof — cancelled cheque with account holder name printed, OR bank statement front page
  • E-signing method — either Aadhaar OTP (easiest) or a Class 2 Digital Signature Certificate
5 Most Common Rejection Reasons

1. Business address proof older than 3 months.  2. Name on PAN doesn't match application spelling exactly.  3. Document file size over 1MB.  4. No NOC from landlord for rented business premises.  5. Aadhaar mobile number not linked (required for OTP e-signing). Fix all five before submitting and you'll go through without a hitch.

Part 2: Udyam (MSME) Registration — 15 Minutes, No Documents

This is one of the easiest government registrations in India and consistently underutilised by small manufacturers. Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and have your Aadhaar and PAN ready.

  • Enter your Aadhaar number and validate with OTP
  • Enter your PAN — the system auto-fetches ITR data from the Income Tax database
  • Select your business activity type and enter your NIC code (see below)
  • Enter approximate investment in plant & machinery and annual turnover
  • Submit — your Udyam Registration Certificate arrives at your email address instantly
Common NIC Codes for MSME Manufacturers

Candles & wax products: 19009 · Soap, detergent, cleaning agents: 20231 · Plastic kitchenware & tableware: 22290 · Steel utensils & cookware: 24310 · Apparel & garments: 14100 · Paper stationery: 17219 · Wooden furniture: 31001. If unsure, the Udyam portal has a built-in NIC code search — type your product and it suggests the right code.

After Both Registrations: What You Need to Know About HSN Codes

Every product you sell on any marketplace requires an HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) code. This code determines the GST rate charged on each sale and appears on every invoice you generate. Using the wrong HSN code means you're charging the wrong tax rate — which creates a compliance problem that's painful to unwind later.

Find Your HSN Code Before You List

Go to cbic-gst.gov.in/gstrates and search by product name. Common rates: Candles = 12% (HSN 3406). Steel kitchenware = 12% (HSN 7323). Cotton apparel = 5% (HSN 6109). Plastic articles = 18% (HSN 3926). When in doubt, call your CA — a one-hour consultation to confirm your HSN code is worth far more than a compliance notice later.

Key Takeaways
  • GSTIN and Udyam are separate registrations — both free, both worth having, don't confuse them.
  • Even below ₹40L turnover, voluntarily register for GST to list on all major marketplaces.
  • Udyam takes 15 minutes with no document uploads. Do it today — there is no reason to delay.
  • The #1 GSTIN rejection reason: name mismatch between application and PAN. Triple-check before submitting.
  • Find and confirm your product's HSN code before listing anywhere. Wrong code = wrong tax rate = compliance headache.
