Everything you need before you can sell online legally. Documents, timelines, and what to do when you are stuck.
GSTIN (GST registration) and Udyam registration (MSME certification) are entirely separate things that serve different purposes. Most manufacturers either confuse them or skip one. Neither is okay.
| Registration | What It Is | Why You Need It | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| GSTIN | Tax identity number for GST compliance | Required by Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho to list products — even if you're below the mandatory threshold | Free |
| Udyam / MSME | Government recognition as a micro, small, or medium enterprise | Unlocks priority lending, subsidies, government tender access, and legal payment protections | Free |
If your annual turnover is below ₹40 lakh (₹20L in some states), you are technically not required to register for GST. However, Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho all require a GSTIN to list products — even for sellers below the threshold. Voluntary registration is the standard path, and it takes the same 7–10 days as mandatory registration.
Select your state, district, and business constitution. For most small manufacturers: "Proprietorship" for sole owners, "Partnership Firm" for partners, "Private Limited Company" if you're incorporated.
Enter your legal name exactly as it appears on your PAN card. Exact match is non-negotiable — a single spelling difference causes automatic rejection. Enter your personal mobile number and email for OTP verification. Use numbers you actively monitor.
Each file must be under 1MB in JPG, PDF, or PNG format. The GST portal has a strict size limit — compress images before uploading using any free tool. Blurry or incorrectly oriented documents are flagged for manual review, which adds 5+ days.
After submission you receive an Application Reference Number (ARN). Save this immediately — it's your proof of pending registration and some platforms accept it as a temporary substitute while your GSTIN processes.
The assigned GST officer may call or email requesting clarification or additional documents. Respond within 24 hours — if you miss the window, your application goes back to the queue and restarts the 7-day clock.
1. Business address proof older than 3 months. 2. Name on PAN doesn't match application spelling exactly. 3. Document file size over 1MB. 4. No NOC from landlord for rented business premises. 5. Aadhaar mobile number not linked (required for OTP e-signing). Fix all five before submitting and you'll go through without a hitch.
This is one of the easiest government registrations in India and consistently underutilised by small manufacturers. Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and have your Aadhaar and PAN ready.

Every product you sell on any marketplace requires an HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) code. This code determines the GST rate charged on each sale and appears on every invoice you generate. Using the wrong HSN code means you're charging the wrong tax rate — which creates a compliance problem that's painful to unwind later.
Go to cbic-gst.gov.in/gstrates and search by product name. Common rates: Candles = 12% (HSN 3406). Steel kitchenware = 12% (HSN 7323). Cotton apparel = 5% (HSN 6109). Plastic articles = 18% (HSN 3926). When in doubt, call your CA — a one-hour consultation to confirm your HSN code is worth far more than a compliance notice later.
